A report from the Express Tribuneconfirms Chaudhry Rashid Ahmad’s appointment as chairman of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) with immediete effect.
Ahmad was serving as federal secretary for information at the ministry of information and broadcasting prior to this.
Pemra spokesperson Fakhar Mughal said the new chairman took charge on Monday after the Establishment Division issued the notice of his appointment. Under the existing laws, the chairman is appointed to a four-year term. The move comes after a ruling by the apex court barring the acting Pemra chairman Dr Abdul Jabbar from holding office.
Ahmad’s career in the information industry spans 30 years. According to The News, he has previously served as the principal information officer for the Government of Pakistan. He has held upper management positions at National Press Trust, Associated Press of Pakistan, Shalimar Recording and Broadcasting Corporation, ministry of information and broadcasting, ministry of water and power, Press Information Department, Information Service Academy, Embassy of Pakistan, Tehran and Pakistan High Commission, Colombo.
